The audience usually experiences the blues & soul stars when they are under spotlights on the stage, singing and firing solos, but in connection with the Blues Heaven festival in Frederikshavn on the first weekend of November, one can even get closer to some of the stars.
The festival introduces ”Talkin’ Blues" - Where Stars Meet and enjoy an American Brunch. Here the audience can sit and come face to face with legend Wee Willie Walker, Rick Estrin, Kid Andersen and Young Toby Lee who already has reached 100.000 followers on social media has achieved 61 million views on FaceBook and YouTube.
"At Blues Heaven we like to give the audience additional experiences, that they don’t see at other festivals," says Peter Astrup. It's obvious to think of "Talkin 'Blues" when we already have the charismatic American blues star of Big Llou Johnson enrolled as presenter of the festival and host of this blues talk, which our stars are very open to, it all takes place at the top of Hotel Jutlandia in Restaurant Panorama, which now boasts the memorable slogan “Where Stars Meet”. Now you can say our audience has the opportunity to meet the stars at the top of Frederikshavn.
Big Llou Johnson - known as "The Voice of the Blues" will take the role of mediator of the blues stories, as told by just 12-years-old Toby Lee from Oxfordshire, England and by the legendary stars Rick Estrin and 76-year-old Wee Willie Walker, who after many year's of not touring was brought back to the limelight by Kid Andersen, who is also on the panel in Restaurant Panorama.
"It's going to be blues-talk at the highest level," says Peter Astrup, who looks forward to the dynamics that may arise around the meeting between 12-year-old Toby, who has had to get free from school to visit Denmark and 76-year-old Wee Willie Walker, who was rediscovered by Norwegian Christoffer Kid Andersen. Kid will tell his story of how he, as a 21-year-old traveled from Larvik, Norway to the United States to quickly become part of the American West Coast blues scene. He met Wee Willie Walker there and a comeback tour was organized for the aging 60’s Goldwax soul blues singer. Willie went on to win 3 Blues Awards in the United States in 2016 for Best Comeback Artist, Best Blues Album, and Best Soul Singer.
Young Toby Lee who became known for his video greeting to the sick and weakened B.B. King will also be intrigued when one of the younger legends, 67-year-old Rick Estrin tells his story. Rick Estrin and Kid Andersen are both a major part of the award-winning band Rick Estrin and The Nightcats.
Immediately after this event Blues Heaven continues with another event that is out with the main festival where there will be a couple of hours of Blues jams over at Freddy's Bar, (20 meters walk) where Kilborn Alley Blues Band with Mike Ledbetter and Toby Lee are jam hosts with various guest soloists joining them.
"We have these two fantastic events happening during the day on Saturday and we are really happy because these are experiences that guests do not expect to get," says Peter Astrup. This sort of thing can easily be done in Frederikshavn where everything - Arena Nord, Restaurant Panorama, the hotels and Freddy's Bar are all within walking distance. And, at the same time there is an opportunity for the audience to see a part of our beautiful city and to enjoy the city's commercial life. Yes, blues carry a lot with them.
